Schematic design for a partial sub-terranian house. The idea of placing main living quarters underground is a very intriguing notion. The thermal efficiency of sub-grade space offers a unique opportunity for incorporating ideas of efficiency into a home in temperate climates. In this design the first floor is entirely underground, except for the entrance facade, which is open. This allows for the aesthetic of a two story, traditional dwelling from the front, while still allowing the majority of the first floor living space to take advantage of the constant sub-grade temperature (approximately 50 degrees fahrenheit). The difficult part is incorporating sufficient natural light and views from the first floor. I have attempted this with the open front facade. The design and ideas are in-progress.
